LEXMARK BAR CODE DISCOVERY

1.  OVERVIEW

    This Readme file pertains to the current release of the LEXMARK BAR CODE
    DISCOVERY application.

    Lexmark Bar Code Discovery is an embedded solution that can be installed
    on printers that support the Lexmark Embedded Solutions Framework
    (eSF) v4.x, v3.x, or v2.x. Using Bar Code Discovery, an administrator
    can create and manage bar code templates to specify the location and type
    of bar codes that users will frequently scan. Other applications can
    then access these templates to reduce the amount of time it takes to scan
    and identify bar codes on a given printer.

3.  REQUIREMENTS

    a.  A printer that supports eSF v4.x, v3.x, or v2.x applications.

        Supported eSF v4.x printers include:

          *  CX510
             *  Required firmware level:  LW41.GM7.P454 or later.

          *  MX61x
             *  Required firmware level:  LW41.SB7.P454 or later.

          *  MX6500
             *  Required firmware level:  LW41.JD.P454 or later.

          *  MX71x
             *  Required firmware level:  LW41.TU.P454 or later.

          *  MX81x
             *  Required firmware level:  LW41.TU.P454 or later.

          *  MX91x
             *  Required firmware level:  LW41.MG.P454 or later.


        Supported eSF v3.x printers include:

    b.  Memory:  The printer must have a minimum of 256MB RAM.


    c.  Hard Disk:  The printer must have a hard disk installed.



4.  LIMITATIONS AND COMPATIBILITY OF THE RELEASE

    a.  If a user scans a page that does not contain any bar codes and selects
        "Search for All Bar Code Types", the bar code search may take five
        minutes or more before failing to find any bar codes. In addition, if
        the page contains a lot of information (text, graphics, etc.), the
        application may discover items that are not bar codes.

        To work around this issue, users can touch "Cancel" on the Search
        Progress screen to cancel a bar code search that is taking too long.
        Users can also touch "Ignore this bar code" on the Scan Preview screen
        to ignore any non-bar code items the application discovers.


    b.  If a user scans a paper type other than Legal and selects
        Automatic bar code discovery, the application may not find any
        bar codes. Automatic discovery is designed only for use with Legal
        sized paper. If you are using a paper type other than Legal,
        use Manual bar code discovery to specify the paper type.

        The Automatic bar code discovery may also fail to find bar codes
        if the page contains bar codes other than PDF 417, Data Matrix,
        UPC/EAN, Code 39, and Code 128. If you are scanning a bar code
        other than one of these types, use Manual bar code discovery to
        specify the bar code type to search for. If you do not know the
        bar code type, use Manual discovery but do not specify a
        bar code type. The application will search for all available
        bar code types.


    c.  When scanning bar codes, the Content Type must not be set to "Text."


    d.  For optimal bar code reading performance, use the same language
        for all alphanumeric bar code content contained on a single page.
