Settings tab

Scan Settings

Select a preset scan setting according to the color and document type for your scan.

  • Color Photo - Print—Scan a color photo for printing.
  • Color Photo - Web—Scan a color photo for use on the Web.
  • Black & White Photo—Scan a black-and-white photo.
  • Black Text—Scan a text-only document.

Custom Settings

Customize the scan settings instead of using a preset scan setting.

Color Depth

Select the amount of color you want in the scanned image. Options are:

  • 24 bit color—Best for scanning color photographs or multi-color charts and graphics.
  • 8 bit grayscale—Best for scanning magazine and newspaper articles or black-and-white photos.
  • 1 bit monochrome—Best for scanning black text.
Resolution (dpi)

Choose a dpi (dots per inch) value from the pop-up menu. Valid values are from 75 to 19200 dpi.

Note: Scanning resolution settings tend to be much lower than printing resolution settings. Scanning a photograph at 300 dpi results in a very good quality printout. Adjusting the dpi settings higher than this can result in very slow operation of the scanner.
Descreen Magazine or Newspaper

Remove wavy patterns from magazines or newspapers. Many types of printed media are created using a process known as screen printing. The resulting documents are made up of many small dots that, when viewed from a distance, form the document contents. This screen printing pattern of dots is often exaggerated by scanning. The result is typically noticeable as a geometric pattern appearing in what should be solid colors. Descreening helps remove the screen printing pattern of dots.

Choose Photo, Text, Art Print, Magazine, Newspaper, or None as the Descreen option. For more information, see Descreening.

Reduce Background Noise

Remove smudges and light background shading in color documents.

Adjustments tab

Brightness

Adjust the lightness or darkness of the scanned image.

Contrast

Adjust the detailing and tone of the image as it is set off against a light or dark background. Increasing contrast makes light colors lighter and dark colors darker. Decreasing contrast flattens the light and dark colors to create a flushed image.

Gamma

Increase or decrease the color correction curve. Enabling gamma lets you adjust the amount of ink placed on the page. Decreasing the gamma causes more ink to be placed on the page and darkens the printed document. Increasing the gamma causes less ink to be placed on the page and lightens the printed document.

Blur/Sharpen

Adjust the level of sharpness of the scanned image.

Fine Tune Rotation

Tilt the image 10 degrees to the left or right.

Invert Colors

Reverse the colors of the image by inverting the RGB data. The effect created is similar to that of a film negative.

Mirror

Produce a mirror image of the document.

Orientation

Change the position of the image in the preview area. Shift between portrait or landscape orientation.

Defaults

Reset the Adjustment controls to the factory default settings.

Preview area

See a preview of the image. Some settings in the Scan dialog are interactive, so you can readily view the changes on the image as you adjust the settings. When you click Preview Again, the original document is re-scanned and recent changes are shown on the image in the preview area.

Auto-crop sensitivity

Select or clear Auto-crop sensitity to turn auto-cropping on or off. Adjust the Auto-crop sensitivity slider to fine-tune auto-cropping.
