When to Align Cartridges
You may need to align cartridges when:
- Characters are not properly formed, are jagged or rough, or are not aligned at the left margin.
- Lines that should be vertical and straight are wavy.
To align the cartridges:
- Load plain paper. For more information, see Loading paper into the paper support.
- Open the Lexmark Solution Center. For more information, see Using the Lexmark Solution Center.
- From the Maintenance tab, click Align to fix blurry edges.
- Click Print to print an alignment page to auto-align the cartridges.
Improving print quality
If you are not satisfied with the print quality of a document, be sure to:
- Use the appropriate paper for the document, for example, use photo paper if you are using a photo cartridge.
- Use paper that is a heavier weight, is bright white, or is coated.
Select a higher print quality:
- From the software application, click File
Print.
- From the Print dialog box, click Properties, Preferences, or Options.
- From the Quality/Speed area, select a higher quality setting.
- Print the document again.
Reinsert the cartridges
If the document still does not have the print quality you want:
- Remove the print cartridges. For more information, see Removing a used cartridge.
- Reinsert the print cartridges. For more information, see Installing print cartridges.
If the quality has not improved, continue with Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles.

- With another clean section of the cloth, repeat steps 3 through 4.
- Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely.
- Reinsert the print cartridges.
- Print the document again.
If the print quality does not improve, repeat Wiping the print cartridge nozzles and contacts, up to two more times.
If print quality is still not satisfactory, replace the print cartridges. For more information, see Ordering supplies.
Preserving the print cartridges
To ensure the longest life from the print cartridges and optimum performance from the All-In-One:
- Keep new print cartridges in their packaging until you are ready to install it.
- Do not remove a print cartridge from the All-In-One except to replace, clean, or store it in an airtight container.
- When it is not in use, keep the print cartridge in the print cartridge storage unit.
Lexmark's All-In-One warranty does not cover the repair of failures or damage caused by a refilled cartridge. Lexmark does not recommend the use of refilled cartridges. Refilling cartridges can affect print quality and cause damage to the All-In-One. For best results, use Lexmark supplies.
Printing with one cartridge
The All-In-One is capable of printing with only the color cartridge installed.
One cartridge options
When using one cartridge:
- There will be no Cartridge Missing message if only the color cartridge is installed.
- When using only a color cartridge, the option Print Color Images in Black and White will be grayed out.
- If you print a black-and-white copy using a computer, with only the color cartridge installed, you will receive a computer screen message stating: You are making a black and white copy with only a color cartridge installed. For best results, black copies should be made with a black cartridge installed.
If you press the black copy
button while in stand-alone mode, using only the color cartridge, you will not receive this message. This is because although you can print with only a color cartridge installed, it is not the most efficient way to print black and white copies.
Cleaning the scanner glass
- Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water.
- Gently wipe the scanner glass.
Note: Make sure all ink or corrective fluid on a document is dry before placing it on the scanner glass.
